DETROIT (AP) _ Ford Motor Co. has taken the wraps off a new subcompact concept car that likely will be the basis of a new small vehicle to be sold around the world.
The Verve concept, designed in Europe, competes in what the industry calls the “B-Car” segment of the market, one that is popular overseas but is smaller than most compact cars sold in the U.S.
Ford officials said that while the rounded Verve is still a concept, elements of it probably will be built into the next generation of subcompact for distribution worldwide.
Derrick Kuzak, head of global product development, said Ford plans to launch a new subcompact between 2008 and 2010.
DETROIT (AP) _ General Motors Corp. says it is testing a new combustion process that could increase fuel economy in conventional engines by up to 15 per cent.
The announcement comes as fuel economy has become a increasingly important issue as gasoline prices have risen. Foreign automakers have captured a bigger share of the U.S. market in part by emphasizing fuel efficiency.
The process GM is testing, called homogeneous charge compression ignition, approaches the fuel efficiency of a diesel engine without the need for advanced pollution controls, the company said in a statement.

Top Gear has gotten the chance to review a car that will not likely see the light of day, but we can say with certainty that a lot of its new ideas will find the way to many of the future Mercedes models. TG’s first impression of the car is great, saying that “the Ocean Drive has more potent sex appeal than all of the gravel-voiced rocker’s Rod Stewart wives and girlfriends put together.”
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) _ It was U.S. fuel economy requirements, not executives from new Chrysler owner Cerberus Capital Management LP, that killed the Imperial luxury sedan, a top Chrysler official said Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars, Frank Klegon, Chrysler executive vice-president of product development, said the decision not to produce the large sedan was made internally by Chrysler officials in response to proposed federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards.
Chrysler scrapped the Imperial, which would have been its largest and heaviest car, last month. It had been shown as a concept at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was to be produced in Canada.

Reports suggest BMW will soon offer a three strong line-up of 44s - the X3, X5, and a vehicle that will bring yet another new acronym to the market – Sports Activity “Coupé” - in the form of the beefy X6
Spy photographers have managed to capture images of engineers testing the heavily-disguised prototype vehicle. Simultaneously, several artist impressions have appeared on the web, including these ones – which were published by Motor Forecast.
Last October 27, 2006 at the Arena Civica in Milan, Italy, the Mini Cooper, Volkswagen Eos and a host of other stunning automobiles emerged victorious at the XIV L’Automobile più Bella del Mondo or The World’s Most Beautiful Automobile” competition for 2006. The international jury led by Bruno Alfieri, the Italian journalist and editor who created the awards back in 1993, chose the best looking cars in various categories such as city cars and compact cars, mid-size hatchback, limousine, coupe, spider, station wagon, concept cars and many more.
After examination of the various new models introduced in 2006, the jury proclaimed the winners in their respective categories. However, upon a closer look on the list of winners, one can see that Japanese and American cars are conspicuously absent from the list. Europe does offer some of the most stunning of automobiles, but do they have the monopoly when it comes to aesthetics? We don’t think so. Still, the list offers a veritable showdown of some of the most beautiful cars ever to grace the road.

First seen at this year’s Detroit Motor Show, the Trailhawk is not only an amazing looking machine, but gives a clear indication of how Jeep wants its cars to drive in the future.
Based on a stretched Wrangler platform and powered by an efficient 3.0-litre diesel, the all-wheel-drive four-seater looks typically tough. However, it promises to deliver a driving experience that will be more refined than any of its predecessors.
