Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. said Wednesday the automaker is “very prepared to get going” in its talks with the United Auto Workers union on a new four-year contract.

Speaking in Chicago following a ceremony to commemorate the launch of a national network of community-based high schools, a project supported by Ford, the executive said the automaker is “still learning all the details” of the deal worked out between the UAW and General Motors Corp. last week, “but the broad framework is certainly something we can work with.”

GM and the UAW agreed on the terms of a new deal that involves significant wage and benefits restructuring, as well as a commitment by the automaker to invest in the U.S. The agreement also includes the establishment of a trust, known as a voluntary employees’ beneficiary association, or VEBA, that will absorb tens of billions of dollars worth of retiree health care liabilities.
