DETROIT (AP) _ Chrysler Group raised the stakes in the warranty game Thursday, offering “lifetime” repairs for the key components of its cars and trucks.
Chrysler’s lifetime powertrain warranty program replaces an existing three-year, 58,000-kilometre warranty.
Effective Thursday, Chrysler said the warranty applies to most of its vehicles and “covers the cost of all parts and labour needed to repair covered powertrain components _ engine, transmission and drive system.”
The company did not list the excluded models. Messages seeking the exclusions were left with a company spokeswoman.
With the offer, the automaker which is about to be spun off by Germany’s DaimlerChrysler AG leapfrogs General Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co.
In September, GM began offering a five-year, 160,000-kilometre drive train warranty, up from three years and 58,000 kilometres.
South Korea’s Hyundai already offered 10-year, 160,000-kilometre powertrain guarantees.
Warranties by other automakers vary.
Chrysler said its warranty applies to the first person who owns or leases a vehicle.
For the warranty to remain in effect, buyers need to have their vehicles inspected at a company dealer once every five years.
The extended warranty “is a statement of confidence to our customers to the reliability of their powertrain. It’s peace-of-mind reassurance for as long as they own the vehicle,” executive vice-president Steven Landry said in a release.
DaimlerChrysler announced in May that it would sell an 80.1 per cent stake in its U.S. unit to Cerberus Capital Management LP.
